”Heart of Rome is not marble of Senate, but sand of Coliseum...”

Gladiator, the movie

The "Blood and Sand" stone, dedicated to the Roman Empire, concludes the ancient section of the collection. Three tiers of arched colonnade covering the stone's crown reproduce the three-story colonnade of the Colosseum, where blood flowed and sand groaned under the heavy hooves of horses and the bare feet of gladiators. It's hard to imagine places that witnessed more suffering than the gladiatorial arenas of Rome. History was made not by government decisions in those ancient times, but later by the blood of tens, hundreds of thousands of slaves. If we look at the stone's pavilion, we see weapons etched into the matte edges—swords, spears, and daggers—with which the Roman gladiators went to their deaths.
