Even if the Master currently has no one to share their achievements with, a part of their consciousness is always the Student, continuously absorbing knowledge, skills, techniques, and methods of their craft, while another part is the Teacher, systematizing their experience, developing methodologies, and rigorously examining themselves. One day, I managed to overhear a conversation between the Teacher and the Student within myself.

Student: What is the difference between craft and art?

Master: Striving for Perfection.

Student: But the ideal is unattainable; we can only endlessly approach it. What's the point of striving if you know you won't achieve the result?

Master: Such thoughts are permissible for a novice, but if a master begins to think this way, he ceases to be a creator of beauty and becomes merely a craftsman. The ideal is both attainable and unattainable simultaneously. It is attainable in the perception of the admiring viewer, reader, listener, connoisseur of jewelry, when the charm of the object of creation inspires a person, gives strength, awakens lofty feelings and creative impulses. But a true master should under no circumstances consider his work to be the achieved ideal, no matter what raptures it may evoke. Otherwise, it means a halt in development, creative death.

Student: Is it true that a work of art can only be something complete and original, possessing its own individual characteristics, and not merely a part of something larger? For example, is art the construction of a building, while the making of bricks is nothing more than a craft, no matter how perfect they may be?

Master: You're right, but only partially. The bricks in your example are indeed devoid of individuality, forming a whole only in their entirety, but if you take the Mona Lisa out of its frame, it doesn't cease to be a masterpiece, although it loses its functional integrity. Art is the spiritualization of matter, imbuing it with the ability to evoke a creative resonance in people's souls. And the tools of the master can be anything: paints and canvas, pen and paper, a guitar and a microphone, or a stone and a grinding wheel. You and I have chosen a gemstone as the carrier of our creative energy, and this places additional responsibility on us. An artist can repaint a failed painting, and a sculptor can take another piece of marble. But sometimes we have to work with stones so rare that each of them can be unique, and finding a replacement will be difficult. Here, we have no right to make a mistake. And how many cases there are when the work of a craftsman-cutter does not improve, but only spoils the stone; when unique, almost perfect crystals of tourmaline, beryl, or quartz are transformed into faceless, clumsy "inserts" of some standard shape! Of course, it is difficult for a person as a creator to compete with Nature in the variety of forms, but the source of inspiration for both is one, and this Source is inexhaustible!

Student: I've heard that if a gemstone's cut is close to perfection, the stone becomes expressionless, devoid of its individuality, as if we were to try to imagine a "perfect" human face – without any small bumps, pores, or scratches – it would be beautiful, but lifeless. What do you say to that, teacher?

Master: I think there's a certain substitution of concepts in your statement. There are certain canons of beauty for the human face that have been established over millennia, and any deviation from them will be perceived, if not as ugliness, then at least not as an enhancement. These canons are well-known – proportionality of features, symmetry, a healthy combination of skin, hair, and eye colors… We are unlikely to call a face beautiful and harmonious if it is covered in deathly pallor, with an excessively large nose or a squinting eye. These features do not give the face charm and individual appeal. The same applies to gemstone cutting. There are strict requirements for the precision of facet convergence, the flatness of their surface, symmetry in accordance with the given design, and the quality of polishing; any deviations from these are considered defects in the cut. And the higher the level of the master, the more precisely he must follow these requirements. The uniqueness and individual character of a stone are given by the combination of color (its shade, brightness, and saturation), mass, and the design of the cut, which do not violate, but only emphasize its beauty and harmony.

Student: It is known that the level of skill is best judged by comparison. Since ancient times, competitions have been held for poets, singers, philosophers, and orators. And even now, various literary competitions, music and film festivals remain popular. What, in your opinion, should competitions for gem cutters be like?

Master: First, let's clarify the concept of competition. I am convinced that creative competitions and festivals have slightly different objectives than, say, sporting competitions. The main goal of creative competitions was to attract attention and popularize a particular type of art. In competitions, the goal of any participant is to achieve victory by defeating their rivals. But Rembrandt didn't need to defeat Rubens to be great, and Tarkovsky's genius doesn't need Oscars. Currently, there are gem-cutting competitions held within the framework of non-profit associations – guilds, associations, and others. But they are still closer to sporting competitions than to creative contests. And I would separate gem-cutting as a sport and gem-cutting as an art.

Student: Did I hear that correctly? Did you say gem cutting as a sport?

Master: What's so strange about that? If we're talking about competitions in their current form, how is stone cutting any different from, say, archery? It requires the same keen eye, the same steady hand, the same attention, concentration, and patience; the same masterful command of the tools; the same element of intuition and "luck" in the face of unpredictable results (a sudden gust of wind/an invisible inclusion in the stone). The total number of points is calculated based on various criteria: the accuracy of the facet junctions and flatness of the facets, symmetry, and polish quality. And even today, absolute results are achieved – one hundred points out of a possible one hundred. This means that for further development, we need to increase the number of stones to be judged, complicate the given design, or invent new judging criteria.

Student: But still, how would you envision the competitions of the future?

Master: First of all, I would highlight different areas in gem cutting and suggest corresponding types of competitions for each of them. For artisan gem cutters, I would choose some standard shapes with a given number of facets and start a speed competition – whoever cuts a set of three stones of different shapes the fastest wins. Of course, penalty points would be awarded for reduced quality. For master craftsmen, the competitions could remain in their current form, based on a given size, design, and raw material, but with a time limit – say, no more than ten hours per stone. But for artistic creators, there would be no restrictions at all! And the evaluation criteria would be radically different, paying more attention to aesthetic perception – even including audience voting. And also, I wouldn't award places, only selecting laureates and awarding special prizes for particularly outstanding works – for originality of design, craftsmanship, overall charm of the stone, meaningfulness, etc. After all, in art, people should unite, not compete against each other.

Student: Could a stone, in addition to its external beauty, also have some kind of meaningful content, be a carrier of information?

Master: Let's reason together. Strictly speaking, any object, item, or image is a carrier of information simply by virtue of its existence. On the external level, this is the properties or characteristics of the object perceived by our senses (color, size, shape, smell, etc.). On the internal level, it is, for example, information about the conditions of crystal growth, contained in its structure and chemical composition. But, as far as I understand, you are talking about additional information acquired by the stone during its processing?

Student: That's absolutely right. I wanted to ask – what can a gem cutter tell people through the language of stone?

Master: That's a good question, and it already contains half the answer. Remember what we talked about earlier. A true artist imbues matter with spirit, in other words, fills it with new positive information. Of course, you can directly apply letters, numbers, or drawings to the facets of a stone; make stones "family stones," "portrait stones," or stones bearing good wishes. And that will also work. But true art speaks not in words, but in images, associations, emotions, and, above all, by evoking a phenomenon of creative resonance in people's minds. Furthermore, various symbols can be encoded in the combination of facets, their shape, or their relative arrangement – from simple and understandable to the deepest, philosophical and worldview-related symbols. Here, for example, is a brief description of the symbolism of one of the faceted stones:

"From a single point at the bottom of the stone, symbolizing the origin of the Universe in the abyss of Nothingness, emanate five binary rays, denoting the five Primordial Elements (earth, water, air, fire, ether) in the unity of their masculine and feminine principles. They are bounded by five points equidistant from the center, from each of which emanate twelve rays, representing the 12 causes of existence of a living being (birth, sense organs, love, perfect knowledge, birth and death, etc.). Thus, 12 x 5 – sixty rays emerge onto the outer rim (girdle) of the stone, also divided into 60 facets (according to the number of years in the cycle of the Eastern calendar) and reflecting the circle of our earthly existence. Rays radiating upward from the girdle are grouped in ten at six points, symbolizing the six worlds in which, according to Eastern beliefs, living beings inhabit, each of which has ten directions of space (four primary ones – north, south, west, east – four intermediate directions, as well as up and down). From these six points, seven rays emanate ("Seven Gates" or "Seven Paths to Bliss"), leading us to the upper face – the platform – which represents the pinnacle of spiritual development and liberation from suffering. Another symbol – the ratio of the diameter of the platform to the overall diameter of the stone – yields the "golden ratio," speaking of the unified, supreme harmony of all existence. Thus, this stone reflects the entire process of cosmic (and, accordingly, human) evolution, from its starting point to its highest point of development.

Stones like parables, legends, or folk tales can be perceived differently by people with different levels of thinking. Some will simply admire the scattering of sparks from their many facets, others will gaze into the kaleidoscope of reflections, and still others will fall silent for long periods, immersed in the spiritual contemplation of the embodied life cycle of the Universe.

The path of a Master always involves mentorship.
